Every weekday I board a train
for the city and travel along one of the oldest railbeds
in the U.S.A. It amazes me how little this utilitarian mode of transport has changed
since the first steam engines pulled coaches in the first
quarter of the nineteenth century. In its time the steam
engine reinvented the world. Travellers were no longer
impeded by distance, most weather, or the vagaries of the
wind.
There were steamships, locomotives, trolleys, elevators,
and finally airplanes. Together with the telegraph,
telephone, and radio they rearranged reality and made the
Internet possible. How so? If it weren't for our ability
to travel anywhere in less than a day, we would have very
little need for instant communication.
Welcome to the wonderful world of transportation.

countries can get along, I present the the Peace Bridge which joins the United
States of America with Canada at Buffalo, New York and Fort Erie, Ontario. Despite
a long time antagonism with American culture, Canadians are still friendly, hospitable
neighbors. More countries should imitate the American-Canadian...I mean the Canadian-American
relationship.
