| In the
beginning there was C.Auguste Dupin, Edgar Allen
Poe's detective who appeared in three short stories.
Poe is generally considered the creator of the
detective genre of mystery story. Later expanded into
the novel form by the Irish author Joseph Sheridan and the English writer Wilkie Collins, many famous
writers took to creating detective works including
Charle Dickens and Mark Twain. Sir Arthur Conan
Doyle's famous detective, Sherlock Holmes,
popularized the art form. The period between the two
world wars saw the creation of some of the best known
detectives. Hercule Poirot, Lord Peter Whimsey,
Father Brown, Philo Vance, Sam Spade, Ellery Queen.
and Nick and Nora Charles are known all over the
world. They are featured in numerous movies, tv shows
and plays.
This site
is devoted to promoting the fine art of the mystery.
The authors featured are my selections of some of the
best of contemporary and classic mystery fiction
writers. I welcome your comments and suggestions.
