Many of us equate the good life with an island paradise. We
picture ourselves as Robinson Crusoe, or the Swiss Family
Robinson, or the two young children in Blue Lagoon. Then,
there is Coming of Age In Somoa, Margaret Meade's
tome to the unspoiled nature of islanders which instilled
in several generations of anthropologists an unrealistic
image that was probably more Meade's than the islanders'.
Of course, islands also bring to mind pirates and buried
treasure. They conjure up fishermen and solitary
lighthouses. Join me in the islands, are they truly
paradise or mysterious, haunted places?
